Yes! You heard it right. On July 19, 2016 Twitter rolled out an application process for verified accounts. That means, now anybody can apply for the verified profile status. For those who are not aware of what verified profile means, its a blue tick mark on the Twitter profile besides the name. Earlier Twitter was concentrating on providing this liberty to only celebrities, well known faces, public figures, organisations, key experts. Basically a verified profile symbolizes authenticity.
Also earlier there was a process to apply for verified status but it was not open for all. Now that Twitter has opened the gates, this is what their blog post says:
Today we announced that we’ve created an online application process for Twitter accounts to receive verified status. Verified accounts on Twitter allow people to identify key individuals and organizations on Twitter as authentic, and are denoted by a blue badge icon.
An account may be verified if it is determined to be of public interest. Typically this includes accounts maintained by public figures and organizations in music, TV, film, fashion, government, politics, religion, journalism, media, sports, business, and other key interest areas. Our goal with this update is to help more people find great, high-quality accounts to follow, and for creators and influencers - no matter where they are in the world - to easily connect with a broader audience.
But the catch still remains because though everybody can now apply for a verified profile status, it will be Twitter's decision whether to approve or not & also there is no guarantee that whoever applies will get their profile verified. Only time will be able to put some light on the what criteria & procedure is followed by Twitter in order to approve the requests.
Its not only personal accounts but also brands/companies can apply. There has to be certain things in place before you apply for the verification. To be able to complete the form, your account must have the following:
- Verified phone number
- Confirmed email address
- Complete bio
- Profile photo
- Header photo
- Birthday (for accounts that are not company, brand, or organization accounts)
- Tweets set as public in tweet privacy settings
Apart from these, Twitter also asks why your account should be verified. So be ready to justify in 500 chars max. They also request for a scanned copy of Govt. issued ID such as passport, driving license. As per Twitter they will notify you about the application via a linked email address and in case your request is denied, you can submit another request for the same account 30 days after receiving the email. Checkout the whole process here.
If you have not submitted your application for a verified Twitter profile, then you can do it so by filling out this form.
All the best & lets keep our fingers crossed.
