Zen Cafe Review: A true zen experience

When it comes to cafes, we all have this standard perception about their relaxing decor & ambiance. There was a buzz about Zen Cafe's coffee, food & the ambiance, since many days. Hence I decided to give it a try.

This cafe is located right inside a furniture shop at KSL House, Raghuvanshi Mills Compound which is right next to High Street Phoenix Mall in Lower Parel. They stand correct with their name "Zen Cafe" because the decor, ambiance, food & coffee sums up to the zen experience. And why not, zen means "dhyana", "meditation" and when you get a chance to be in such ambiance & relish on some good food & coffee then indeed, you are bound to get into meditation mode.

This cafe is also a great place to work from. If at times you wish to work at peace, then this is the place to be. Sad that I don't stay around this cafe, else I would have made this cafe as my workplace. But nonetheless, this cafe has a lot of offer. Their staff is well mannered, polite & cooperative. Ask them about their specialties & you won't be disappointed.

Being a veg cafe, the menu is limited but the selection of the menu is interesting & not heavy on pocket at all. I tried:

Roasted Pumpkin Ravioli

Roasted Pumpkin Ravioli

I am not a fan of Pumpkin much but I made a good decision of trying it out. The Ravioli was light & balanced with flavors. Now I don't hate Pumpkin.

Avocado Sushi Roll

Avocado Sushi Roll

They have amazing veg sushi options including platter. Yeah! Veg Sushi, sounds odd right, but its a complete different experience. Also their California Roll is worth trying.

Cappuccino & Hazelnut Chocolate Ganache with Vanilla Ice Cream

When it comes to coffee, they have variety of options to choose right from premium Espressos to Artisanal Coffee. But I decided to stick with my old habits & preferences.

Hazelnut Chocolate Ganache with Vanilla Ice Cream

Rich in flavor & taste, Hazelnut Chocolate Ganche is a perfect thing to be paired with coffee & forget about calories for some time. I even ordered 2 more as takeaway to have at home.

Apart from these delights, they also have Smartinis, Pizzas, Wraps, Platters, Soups & Salads & other options in desserts such as Tiramisu, Baked Ricotta Cheesecake, Cinnamon Carrot Cake & Chocolate Walnut Brownie on the menu. Overall it was a true satisfying zen experience! Looking forward to tryout more dishes from their menu next time soon.

Fab Box Review: Making crave-worthy healthy snacks

When was the last time you had an healthy snack when you felt hungry between your meals? What do you normally do when you feel hungry between the meals, especially when you are at work or traveling? You too end up eating some junk food just like me? Be it at work, traveling or even if am at home, I always end up eating some junk food when I feel hungry between the meals. Few days ago I was just scrolling my Twitter timeline & came across Fab Box. Its an healthy snack subscription service which strives to make crave-worthy snacks very healthy.

I know there are many services like Fab Box but for the first time I decided to give a try to such snack subscription box service. After a few time of stalking their Twitter & Facebook profiles, I landed up on their website. Their user-friendly website helped me to get an overall idea about their snack options & the subscription plans. It was good to see wide variety of snack options in Nuts, Health Bars, Roasted Nut Mix, Real Fruit Chews, Nature Baked Cookies on their website.

Since it was my first time, I decided to go with their trial box. We can choose from their snack options to make our own snack box of 5 snacks or else we can go for their Surprise Fab Box in which they pick the snack items for us. I decided to go for the Surprise Fab Box. Knowing that each snack comes in an average of 150gms pack, the pricing seemed to be decent.

Their subscription plans goes like this:

Trial Box - Rs. 999.00 (Free delivery) One box of 5 snacks of 150 gms each + 1 bonus snack pack.

3 Months Subscription - Rs. 2,849.00 (Free delivery) One box of 5 snacks of 125-200 gms each + bonus snack pack per month. Total 3 Fab Boxes.

6 Months Subscription - Rs. 5,399.00 (Free delivery) One box of 5 snacks of 125-200 gms each + bonus snack pack per month. Total 6 Fab Boxes.

After placing my order for the Trial box, I received a call from their in-house chef to know about my eating preferences, diet, allergies if any, taste preferences since that was my first order with them. Its their protocol to understand the customer's preferences & choices before they send the order. In 24 hours I did received my box which was a surprise to me because I had placed my order on a Friday noon & the box landed at my doorstep on Saturday itself.

So what was in the box?

  • Dried Blackberries
  • Honey Roasted Almonds
  • Almond Bar
  • Soya Nuts
  • Fox Nuts

The snack packs came in a decently packaged box. The individual snack packs were travel friendly & came in with all the required description regarding that specific snack on the pack. It was good to see the packs were reusable & easy to carry.

  • Wide variety of snacks to choose
  • The snacks are healthy
  • No use of artificial colors, sweeteners, harmful chemicals & fried items
  • Supports fair trade

  • The snacks are addictive in a good way

It was a good experience right from the beginning. To munch on these healthy snacks between the meals rather than ending up eating junk food, Fab Box seemed to be worth it.

The Laughter Chapter Cafe Review: Spreading happy & good food vibes

I love visiting cafes. They are like the attention magnets for me. Whenever I see a cafe, I have to visit it. Good news is that many cafes are opening up in Mumbai & that too pocket-friendly. So yay! I happened to visit this cafe called "The Laughter Chapter Cafe" in Mulund recently.

Its located at a walking distance from Mulund Station West. Its quite an attention seeker by itself. The best landmark to trace this eatery is Mulund College of Commerce (MCC). Its just opposite the lane which goes towards this college. Thanks to its eye catchy graphics which is easily visible while passing by. Wise decision to open a cafe near the college.

The interiors of this cafe are well designed & it shouts on how much efforts have gone into creating a vibrant yet appealing look & feel. The cafe is small but its decor is trendy & the seating arrangements are good enough to accumulate around 15-20 people. This cafe attracts a lot of college crowd and thus I call this place as a "College Friendly" cafe. This joint has become the college katta (adda) for many. Always buzzing with college crowd. Yes it offers free Wi-Fi as well. Now you know!

Their menu mostly offers fast food options like Fries, Garlic Breads, Nachos, Pizzas, Pastas, Maggi, Rice Bowls, Sandwiches, Cold/Hot Beverages & few desserts. Considering it is a veg cafe, its still doing pretty good since the day it was opened. And yes, they serve Jain menu too.

Their Crunchy Oreo Shake is to die for. And make sure to ask for a topping of Ice Cream and Nutella. Pizzas, Rice Bowl are good and comes in decent portions. As compared to the price offerings, their portions are decent.

Few of their delights I tried:

Oreo Crunchy Shake - Oreo never disappoints

Fantabulous 5 Pizza - Crunchy pizza base topped with baby corn, olives, onions, mushrooms & cottage cheese

Loaded Nachos - Crispy Nachos chips topped with cheese sauce & tangy lettuce salad

The Mexican Bowl - A bowl filled with rice, re-fried beans, salsa sauce & nachos garnished with sour cream

This cafe tends to be mostly occupied during evenings on weekdays & on Saturday's. Since their target audience is mostly college students, this cafe remains closed on Sundays. All in all its a good food experience and not being heavy on the pocket is what this place is all about. And when such cafes are offering options like home delivery within nearby distance & takeaways then they have to be given brownie points.

Tea and Conversations Cafe Review: Cute & pocket friendly cafe

The culture & the trend of tea cafes is dominantly catching up these days. Many tea cafes are opening & must say that Mulund in Mumbai gets a cute little tea cafe called “Tea and Conversations” which serves only veg menu. The name itself says it all. Its a treat for all youngsters who love having conversations over some delicious food & tea.

Its a cosy, cute little cafe situated in the lane right opposite to Johnson & Johnson in Mulund West. From the outside itself it tends to give an idea about its interiors & the look & feel because of the vibrant appeal they have managed to bring to the cafe.

The cosy ambiance was welcomimg. Good thing about this place is that the interiors are done with proper planning & one can easily sense about the amount of creativity that must have gone into the planning & the execution.

The look & feel of the cafe is positive, energetic & lively. Every wall has its own unique identity, thanks to the mugs, post-it notes, posters & books shelf installations on the walls.

I tried:

Tiramisu MilkshakeIt was as if whole Tiramisu was converted into milkshake. Very different & unique.

Saffron & Cream MilkshakeThe blend of Saffron & Cream made this milkshake worthy.

Garlic Bread with Melted Cheese Nothing has to go wrong with Garlic bread & cheese and these guys did managed to take this to another level by adding melted cheese over the bread which ultimately gave the happiness of cheese in every bite. Its one of their specialty.

French Fries with Assorted Dips - Generous amount of hot piping french fries with variety of assorted dips like Mayo, Schezwan, Garlic, Salsa, Coriander Garlic, Mint Mayo uplifted the texture & taste of the fries. This is also one of their specialty.

Chocolate Pizza - I have tasted Chocolate Grill Sandwich before at various places but chocolate pizza caught my attention. They offer pizzas in 7″ & 10″ base options. The pizza came with chocolate crust topping with Mozzarella cheese, gems & choco chips. It was full of chocolate. If you have a sweet tooth, then its a must try.

As far as their rest of the menu goes, they have a wide variety of tea offerings as in Indian chai, Black teas, Green teas, Iced Teas. They also have tried to club coffee & milkshakes in their menu & its not just about teas. Their Chai Nashta menu includes Biscuits, Khaari, Toast, Bread Butter, Bun Maska, Bread – Jam/Cheese/Chutney, Bread & Baked Beans. Rest of menu includes snack items, Burgers, Pizzas, Sandwiches/ Grill, Waffles, Maggi & they also have Jain menu.

Personally I felt the cafe is small & it occupies approx 18-20 people at one time within that space. It also becomes noisy when it gets fully occupied. The owners are aware of the space limitations and they said they will be working on the same. But still the cafe is getting good response and on the evenings, specially on the weekends this cafe gets busy & the waiting list starts increasing. I also noticed many teenagers waiting outside the cafe for their turn. They even have board games & on request they assemble it on the tables. They have managed to crack the menu by considering the likes & dislikes of the youth & hence the menu is not heavy on the pocket which is indeed a positive aspect.

Burgundy Box Review: Ready to eat meal box experience

Life has become so hectic. Thanks to our priorities, work schedules, deadlines & this & that. At times we hardly get time for ourselves to enjoy a cooked meal in peace. Right? And I guess this must be the reason we are seeing so many food ordering services emerging in the market. In this post I will be talking about Burgundy Box. Yes, one of the emerging food ordering service I came across.

Burgundy Box is a ready to cook meal kit delivery service which cover a range of culinary experiences, from Indian to International. They go by the tagline “Happiness is Homemade” & looks like they really mean it. The meal kits come in two options:

  • DIY Meal Kit delivers all the ingredients required for that specific meal in the box which later can be cooked in our respective kitchen.
  • Served Meal Box delivers freshly prepared meals at our doorstep. All we have to do is warm it up & enjoy.

Recently I tried their Served Meal Box option & to my experience it was hassle free. Their menu gives options between Veg, Non Veg, Healthy Meal Plan & even Desserts which are decently priced. So for Sunday evening dinner, I placed my order on Saturday. Their ordering process is quite easy. Select from the menu, pick the delivery slot (Yes they have the same day delivery option too) & pay. They deliver to only specific areas in Mumbai but when I contacted them to ask if they could deliver it to my location, I was told that they also deliver to other locations within Mumbai if the minimum order is around Rs. 1000/-.

My order included:

  • Grilled chicken steak with mashed potato & chili garlic tossed veggies
  • Handi Paneer with Lachha Parantha
  • Handi Chicken with Lachha Parantha
  • Double Chocolate Mousse
  • Chocolate Brownie Fudge

Along with my order which came right during the time slot I had mentioned while placing my order, I received one of their salad offerings “Harissa spiced chicken with garlic tossed broccoli, zucchini, bell peppers with honey chili dressing which was complimentary because they wanted me to try one of their Healthy Meal Plan option. Food was well cooked to the perfection in terms of taste, flavors with right amount of seasoning & spices. In terms of portions, the meal boxes & desserts were enough for one person each but salad was easily manageable between 2 people. The meal boxes came in very neat packaging. I would be surely ordering from Burgundy Box again in the future.

Long & Short The Gastrobar Review: Drinking games, cocktails & food comes together

The blend of cocktails & good food automatically becomes the perfect mantra of celebration. May that celebration be with your friends or family, it simply becomes an experience to remember. What if this experience is enhanced with some games? Heard of Jenga? UNO? I am sure you would have heard about it or even must be playing at home with family or friends. To add further, if I ask how would it be if these games were given a drinking twist?

This is what Long & Short, The Gastrobar in Mumbai is offering to their guests. Long & Short is one of the coolest property located at Intercontinental, Marine Drive. The location, its calm ambiance simply sets the tonality of the dining experience.

The concept “Games People Play” is one of the many attractions at Long & Short. They have customized games like Jenga & UNO by adding drinking twists to the game rules. The USP about Long & Short is that they bring Street Food cuisines from all over the globe to their menu and add their own magic. They have some signature cocktails which they recommend time to time. They recommended a few:

Pink Grapefruit - This is straight from their L&S Cocktail Factory. Pink Grapefruit with Vodka. Simple yet elegant. They also have other flavors like Classic & Passion Fruit.

The Bloodiest Mary - The combination of Tequila, Vodka, Habanero Chilies, Smoked Tomato Juice, Worcestershire Sauce & Lime was totally worth the spicy kick. Prefer very spicy one? Well its just one request away.

Cotton Candy Martini - This one was heavy on the sweeter side because of the cotton candy with a mix of Vodka & Cranberry Juice. But if you prefer sweet cocktails, try this one.

The Mumbai Local (Kacchi Kairi) - Love gola? Then this is a must try. Gola with combination of Whiskey, Rum, Vodka & Gin. Apart from Kacchi Kairi, you also can ask for other flavors like Kala Khatta & Santra. And yes, while we were on to this cocktail, we even played few rounds of UNO.

Gum Powder Baby AppamsNice piping hot baby appams took straight to South India.

Scottish Sushi RollSmoked Salmon & Truffled cream cheese uplifted the whole sushi experience. The attempt was good.

Make-A-Mezz - The fresh Pita Blinis with creamy hummus, spicy muhammarah & tabouleh was on a lighter side. But I love Hummus & Pita Bread, so it was like comfort food.

Hibachi Chicken Skewers - The spicy grilled chicken skewers with Asian slaw was the highlight as it was rightly cooked by maintaining the tenderness of the chicken.

Desi Fritto Misto - Perfectly fried trio of Prawns, Fish & Squid in Amritsari style was good enough to satiate us for the mains.

Veg Flat Bread Pizza - Who doesn’t love Pizza? Pizza is love. Be it any pizza, answer is always yes. This flat bread pizza had a crunchy base with right mount of toppings: Spicy Tomato Sauce, Mushrooms, Corn, Olives & Green Capsicum.

Spaghetti Arrabbiata - Spaghetti well blended with right amount of Olive oil, Garlic, Red chilly, Dried tomato & Tomato Sauce made this dish perfect.

M's Rocky Road Pancake Mess - This Rocky Road was loaded with Marshmallow’s, Salted Caramel, Banana, Brownie Walnut Soil & Candid Pecans. Yes, this drool-worthy fusion almost took us to heaven but we came back to have another dessert.

Mini Cinnamon Roll Sundae - The Blueberry Compote was an explosion of flavors packed in to this glass.

Sipping these cocktails & relishing on these delicious food over few rounds of Jenga & UNO kept us so engrossed that we didn’t even realized how quick the time passed. As far as the pricing is concerned, it is fairly competitive. But we will say that its one of the experience to witness when in town.

iChef Review: The gourmet cooking experience with ready to cook meal kits

I had got an opportunity to try out iChef.in‘s ready to cook meal kits. iChef.in is a service which delivers Gourmet ready to cook meal kits which includes everything. Right from the ingredients (well tagged & in right portions just as much required for that recipe), step by step recipe cooking method in a very decently packed box except salt, pepper & the utensils which every kitchen is equipped with). It also comes with an ice pack which allows the ingredients to stay fresh for 24 hours without refrigeration. Once the kit is delivered, it has to be stored in refrigerator & to be cooked within 5 days after the delivery.

Many at times it happens that we want to cook but aren’t aware of the recipe method or we feel lazy to go out in the market & grab all the ingredients. We all have our own busy schedules and we end up ordering food from a nearby restaurant or we head to a restaurant to grab a bite. But for those who really want to cook a Gourmet recipe in their kitchen, iChef.in is the option.

The two recipe kits which I tried:

Conchiglioni with Corn Cheese Balls (Veg)

Thai Grapefruit Salad (Veg)

This is how the Thai Grapefruit Salad turned up in just 15 mins of cooking. It was indeed healthy & yet tasty. The salad was easily manageable between 3 people. Every ingredient was utilized to make this dish & nothing got wasted. Interesting part is that they keep changing their menu so they are never out of variety. One needs to just check their website for the menu. Either place the order straight from their website or they are just a phone call away (022-65680555). Currently they deliver all across Mumbai, Navi Mumbai & Thane with 2 delivery slots (11AM – 1PM). The cutoff time is 7AM the same day & (6PM – 9PM). The cutoff time is 1PM the same day. The orders placed after 1PM are delivered in the next morning slot. Overall it was a great experience when it came to experimenting in the kitchen with the help of iChef.in‘s ready to cook meal kits. Give it a try guys. So if you do try their recipe kits, do let me know how they turn up.

Wok This Way Review: The woktastic experience

I always had a fascination of eating Asian cuisine in those paper boxes they show in Hollywood series, especially Big Bang Theory. Recently got the opportunity to try out this place in Lower Parel, called Wok This Way & I loved this place. The place has its own vibrant yet elegant appeal, thanks to the ambiance. The outlet is well planned & maintained. Normally we see the kitchen is inside towards the extreme opposite end, but here the kitchen comes first & then the main seating area.

I love their concept of letting the customers choose what they want to eat as per their taste. We can choose starting from the wok, base, sauces, toppings, protein & condiments to have the food custom made. Honestly, according to me, non veg (chicken, fish, prawns) goes perfect with the wok when it comes to Asian cuisine but to my surprise this place being vegetarian, they really have managed to take vegetarian food to a whole new level & have kept it healthy too. The place has nice seating arrangement & not to forget the open glass kitchen where you can watch your order being prepared.

Their menu card is like the order form which reminded me of school days where in we were asked to fill in the answers & submit to the teacher. The staff is co-operative & the service is quick. According to the owner, Mr. Atit they prepare the sauces in-house after every 2 days & the veggies are stocked fresh daily. Their paper boxes are designed in such a way that the food remains hot for 1 hour max. So the takeaway option works well too.

I tried:

Hakka Noodles with other selections

Teppanyaki Grill (Cottage Cheese & Peas) with other selections

They serve two options: Medium wok – Rs. 199/- (300 gm) & Grand wok – Rs. 249/- (450 gm). The price may look bit on higher side but considering the healthiness & freshness in the food, that feels worth it. Well, overall experience of seeing your food being prepared right in front of you and the eating experience is amazing! And yes, the food is indeed delicious.

Mamledar Misal in Thane is a paisa wasool spicy experience

There ere are many joints/ hotels/ restaurants which are known for their signature served dishes. Be it a small joint or be a lavish restaurant. People in Maharashtra can relate to Vada Pav, Pav Bhaji. And another major attraction is Misal Pav.

What is Misal Pav?
It is a traditional dish from Maharashtra known for its high spice content. It consists of spicy curry usually made of sprout of Mataki and chilly powder gravy called ‘Kutt’. The final dish is topped with punjabi mix, farsan or sev, onions, lemon and coriander. It is usually served with Pav. There are different version of Misal Pav such as Kolhapuri Misal, Nashik chi Misal, Puneri Misal, Khandeshi Misal and Nagpuri Misal name signifies area where this misal is served.

There is another place in Thane West which is famous for their signature Misal called as “Mamledar Misal” in Thane. Well actually its not the real name of their joint. The actual name of the joint is “Shri Upahargruha”. If you ask anyone near Thane station about “Shri Upahargruha” people wont recognize but if you ask where is the “Mamledar Misal” joint, people will instantly will guide you with the location. So why this name “Mamledar”? Its mainly because this joint is right next to Mamledar Kacheri, Thane Police Chowki & Tahsildar’s Office on Thane Station Road. And it gained its reputation of serving the best spicy Misal on the basis of their quality & taste. They serve the Misal in three spicy levels. Non spicy, Medium Spicy & Spicy (They take the term spicy very seriously). One can also enjoy Buttermilk (chaas), Lassi or even tea along with the Misal.

The joint opens around 8AM and closes around 10.30PM. And trust me this place is always buzzing with people eager to try their signature misal. The joint is small in occupancy and hardly occupies 20-30 people at once & hence you will find a long queue during lunch & dinner time. But even if there is a long queue, the wait is always worth it. Also they have separate counter for takeaways. So where is this place exactly? This place is near Masunda Lake & Dadoji Kondadev Stadium, Thane West. If you really want to have a spicy experience (paisa wasool) but okay with a normal sitting arrangement & not the lavish ambiance, this joint is a must to visit.

The Good Vibes Cafe Review: A cosy cafe with great food

I had been hearing about The Good Vibes Cafe from my friends a lot, specially for their breakfast menu & other specialties.

This cafe is situated just next to Indra Yard on the Mulund-Goregaon Link Road, near Runwal Green in Mulund West. Its blue exteriors catches the attention while passing by. In the evenings also its well noticed as its well lit up. Its a small cafe & its cosy ambiance welcomed us as soon as we entered. Well maintained cafe with neat seating areas. They have two seating areas, one at the ground level & other one at the upper deck which normally is termed as Sheesha Lounge (Avoid sitting on the upper deck if you are not comfortable with the smell of smoke). Since it was breakfast time, I went for their:

Farmer’s Breakfast (one of their Euro breakfast offering which is served with fruit juice) – Nice hot omelette with gherkins, olives, tomato & chicken sausage on the top, served with hash brown potato & the juice (I went for Pineapple) & 2 slices of bread toast.

Chili Garlic Chicken Sausages – Well sauteed, chili garlic flavored chicken sausages served piping hot. Indeed flavorsome.

Belgian Waffles with Nutella – If you are a fan of Waffles, then its a must try. Apart from the breakfast menu, they are also known for their fast food, continental & desserts offerings. I felt the service was a bit slow but its a cafe where in people drop by with friends to have some conversations over some good food. The menu is decently priced & does not cause any heavy hole to the pocket. Overall a good, decent place to chill out with friends but be ready to keep on pushing for your order.
